中文摘要 / Summary in Chinese

A group of 8 IFT students joined the 2018 Macao and Jiangsu University Students Cultural Exchange Programme. The activities took place in the cities of Nanjing and Nantong, in Jiangsu Province, Mainland China, and the programme ran from 19 to 25 June.

It was attended by more than 80 Macao students from an aggregate of 6 local higher education institutions.

The aim of the 7-day scheme was to provide participants with opportunities to learn more about the culture and history of Mainland China, including the latest developments in Jiangsu Province. The initiative also targeted promotion of exchanges between higher education students from Macao and those from, respectively, Nanjing University and Nantong University.

As part of the programme, the Macao students visited the facilities of Nanjing University and those of Nantong University, attending seminars at the 2 institutions.

The programme featured tours to a number of landmarks in Jiangsu Province. They included Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s Mausoleum and the Purple Mountain Observatory. The latter is dubbed the “cradle of modern astronomy in China”.

Participants also visited the Memorial Hall of the Victims in Nanjing Massacre by Japanese Invaders. The museum pays tribute to those that were killed by the Imperial Japanese Army in the Nanjing Massacre that occurred in and around the then capital of China, Nanjing, after it fell under the control of Japanese forces in December 1937.

In Nantong, the programme participants visited the Nantong Museum. It was established by Zhang Jian, considered one of the pioneers of Chinese modernisation, to promote the spread of knowledge in China. The facility is regarded as the first museum of its kind on the Mainland.

Another highlight of the programme was a 1-day exploratory tour of Nantong. It enabled Macao students to immerse themselves in the local culture and lifestyle.
