Mr. Gedeon Tumong from the Hotel Institute Montreux explored in his talk topics such as hotel revenue management and strategies for enhancing business performance

On 19 April, UTM welcomed Mr. Gedeon Tumong, a scholar from the Hotel Institute Montreux (HIM) in Switzerland to give a guest lecture. The event, hosted by UTM’s Assistant Professor Dr. Joey Sou Pek U, who was joined by Lecturer Dr. Gong Jian, centred on finance in hospitality.

HIM was established in 1985, and is one of the four hospitality higher education institutions operated by the Swiss Education Group (SEG), a leading international tourism and hospitality education provider, and a UTM partner.

Earlier this year, UTM and SEG announced a new scheme providing UTM graduates with direct admission opportunities for additional studies at SEG-operated higher education institutions. This agreement builds on the success of the existing “3+1 Dual Bachelor’s Degree Programme” jointly made available by both parties.

Mr. Tumong holds an MBA from Schiller International University, Florida, in the United States. He also possesses certificates in Market Intelligence and Financial Regulations from the New York Stock Exchange and the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. He has worked for international organisations such as the United Nations.

During the lecture, Mr. Tumong provided a detailed explanation of hotel room pricing principles and the pricing logic for different sales channels. He shared strategies for effectively utilising revenue/cost management tools to enhance hotel performance. Additionally, he discussed methods for boosting hotel revenue by increasing customers’ length of stay.

Furthermore, the guest speaker discussed reasons for guest no-shows, such as weather conditions and reservation system malfunctions, and suggested internal and external steps to address these issues. He also highlighted the importance of calculating overbooking ratios, to predict revenue and improve revenue per average room.

The lecture offered valuable opportunities for students to acquire knowledge. UTM’s Dr. Gong actively engaged with them in discussions on profitability-related topics, as Mr. Tumong’s explanations deepened students’ understanding of hotel pricing principles and revenue management.
