From July 26 to July 31, the UTM Debate Team participated in the “Star of the Greater Bay International Chinese Debate Tournament”, hosted by the Macau University of Science and Technology. Following victories in local heavyweight competitions such as the Macao-wide tournament and the Municipal Cup, the UTM Debate Team achieved outstanding results on the international debate stage, securing third place.

The Star of the Greater Bay International Chinese Debate Tournament aims to create a platform for communication and exchange among students from the Greater Bay Area and other prestigious universities worldwide. This year’s event brought together 24 renowned university debate teams from China and further afield, featuring nearly 200 participants who engaged in 31 intense and thought-provoking debates over the course of five days.

During the preliminary round, the UTM Debate Team faced off against debate teams from South China University of Technology and Shanghai University. Combining the scores from both matches, the UTM Debate Team secured the top spot in its group, advancing smoothly to the next stage.

In the rematch round, the UTM Debate Team engaged in a fierce battle with the representative team from Tsinghua University, debating on the theme of “Olympic Spirit”. Its victory propelled the UTM Debate Team into the top four.

In the semifinal stage, the UTM Debate Team and the MUST Debate Team engaged in a discussion under the topic of “Is it desirable to judge heroes based on success or failure?” The debaters from both sides explored the new national debate on this classic topic, paying tribute to tradition while also hoping to continually refine and innovate in debating.

In the final round, the UTM Debate Team clinched the third-place trophy. Additionally, UTM team member Dofris Li Weiwen received the honour of “Best Debater” in individual rounds at the matches against the teams from Tsinghua University and South China University of Technology.

The Star of the Greater Bay International Chinese Debate Tournament encourages young students to explore diverse perspectives, strengthen their sense of national identity, and enhance social engagement, promoting their holistic development. UTM students emerged from the competition with sharpened critical thinking skills, demonstrating exceptional courage and showcasing the university’s excellence.
