Ms. Amy Ng has been among the first group of UTM students joining a dual master’s degree programme linked to The University of Queensland in Australia. She praises the scheme, saying it has helped broaden her academic horizons
UTM launched in the 2022/2023 academic year a ‘1+1 Dual Master’s Degree Programme’ in collaboration with The University of Queensland (UQ), one of Australia’s premier higher education institutions. The programme allows eligible postgraduate students from UTM to spend a portion of their studies at UQ, culminating in the award of two master’s degrees, one from each institution.
Ms. Amy Ng Si In, from UTM’s Master of Science in Hospitality and Tourism Management programme, seized the chance to enhance her studies and overall life experience via the dual programme. She says it showcases the benefits of an international education that blends academic rigour with practical experience.
Ms. Ng began her studies at UQ in February this year. The Macao local praises the dual master’s programme between UTM and the Australian university for broadening her academic horizons. “The support from staff and access to industry connections have been instrumental in preparing me for future career opportunities,” she adds.
“At the beginning of my studies, attending events like the faculty networking night allowed me to connect with fellow students from different majors and cultural backgrounds,” Ms. Ng recalls. “These interactions have helped me form lasting friendships and professional relationships.”
She highlights the programme’s role in advancing her capabilities. “I have developed strong analytical and problem-solving skills, which are crucial for strategic decision-making” in the tourism and hospitality industry, Ms. Ng says. “The practical experiences and projects have enhanced my event planning and management abilities, ensuring I can effectively organise and execute successful events.”
One of her most memorable experiences at UQ has been participating in a research project on sustainable tourism practices. “This allowed me to delve into the latest industry trends and understand the importance of environmental management in tourism,” Ms. Ng explains. “Collaborating with peers on this project provided valuable insights and practical knowledge that are essential for my future career.”
Outside the classroom, there was also a world to explore, not only at UQ, but also in Brisbane, Queensland’s capital city where the university is located. Ms. Ng praises UQ for its cultural diversity, which she says has improved her intercultural communication skills.
She recommends other students at UTM to make use of its dual master’s degree partnership with UQ. “The UQ campus is beautiful year-round, with pleasant seasons and stunning flower blooms that make studying here a delight,” Ms. Ng remarks.
