They seek entry to the University to advance their academic knowledge and skills, and also to take advantage of the many opportunities that come from being a UTM student.

Candidates accepted by the University have the chance to access a number of scholarships. Such grants can help ensure financial constraints do not prevent entrants from furthering their studies at UTM. There is a focus on supporting students from countries covered by the ‘Belt and Road’ initiative proposed by President Xi Jinping, in order to increase exchanges within Asia and stimulate common development.

Ton Nu Kieu Trang, from Vietnam, is among the students benefitting from such support. She is now in Year 4 of the Hotel Management Bachelor’s Degree Programme.

“My decision to join UTM was driven by my passion for hotel management and the desire to pursue my studies at a reputable school,” Trang says. “The high QS ranking, extensive scholarship opportunities, and conducive learning environment convinced me that UTM was the ideal choice for me.”

In the 2024 edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject, the University secured the 12th position globally among higher education institutions in hospitality and leisure management.

Like many other international students at UTM, Trang says her time with the University “has been a transformative journey”.

At UTM, she took part in various types of internship, as well as attending a number of activities and competitions supported by the University. “These experiences not only boosted my confidence but also enabled me to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios,” Trang says.

The Vietnamese student recalls the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, which restricted international travel to Macao. During her first two years of studies at UTM, Trang had to attend classes remotely. “I had to adapt to online learning, which was undoubtedly one of the most challenging periods for me,” she admits.

“Fortunately, as the situation improved, I was able to come to Macao and experience campus life at UTM. This transition opened up a world of opportunities for me.”

As she prepares for graduation this summer, Trang says studying at UTM has equipped her with “industry-specific knowledge” as well as “essential life skills”. She adds: “UTM’s emphasis on practical learning, industry exposure, and networking opportunities has prepared me to face the challenges of the hospitality industry with confidence.”

During her studies at the University, Trang was a recipient of an Education Fund Scholarship, supported by Macao’s Education and Youth Development Bureau. These scholarships are for outstanding students studying in Macao. Benefits include a full waiver for tuition fees and student hostel fees, plus a living allowance.

“I am grateful for the scholarship that has supported my education, and I am excited to embark on a promising future, with the knowledge and experiences gained at UTM,” Trang concludes.

A fulfilling journey

The welcoming of foreign students at UTM highlights Macao’s unique positioning and its contributions to the ‘Belt and Road’ initiative, particularly as a platform promoting people-to-people exchanges. Additionally, it helps foster cooperation in education and training between China and other countries participating in the initiative.

Le Ngoc Bao Han, known at UTM as Apple, is another Year 4 Hotel Management student coming from Vietnam. She too was a recipient of an Education Fund Scholarship.

“I came to know about UTM through a promotion event in Vietnam back in 2019,” she recalls. “I made the decision to leave my studies in Vietnam and pursue my overseas education at UTM after learning about its high ranking among hospitality colleges in Asia and the world.”

Apple says her student journey at UTM “has been quite fulfilling and eventful”. She reports having gained not just knowledge but also lifelong friends. The University also provided her “an opportunity to experience an exchange programme in one of its partner schools,” which she says was “unforgettable” in terms of education and personal development.

At UTM, the Vietnamese student got the opportunity “to study, work and collaborate with talented classmates in a creative and free environment, where students are encouraged to speak up about their ideas.”

Looking ahead to the next five years, Apple hopes to pursue a master’s degree as well as gain some work experience in order to support her career growth. Regardless of where her professional path takes her, she is sure of one thing: her studies at UTM will have played a ‘significant role’ in getting her there.

A new world

While Trang and Apple have almost completed their bachelor’s degree studies at UTM, Nepal’s Anjol Bhattarai began his journey at the University at the start of the current academic year. He is a student in the Culinary Arts Management Bachelor’s Degree Programme.

Anjol explains he got to know about UTM through family members living in Macao.

Describing his time at the University so far, Anjol admits it has been challenging but also fun. “Most importantly,” he adds, “coming from a country where education is more theoretical than practical, UTM introduced me to new things and technologies that I never knew before.”

Anjol says the scholarship provided to him by UTM – waiving the tuition fees – has been key to fulfilling his dream of studying abroad. He hopes to be able to give something back to UTM and to Macao later on in his professional career, making good use of the education he received and echoing the overall purpose of the ‘Belt and Road’ initiative in terms of boosting ties between participating countries and places.

Editor: UTM Public Relations Team

Being a leading university in Asia, UTM attracts students from other Asian countries, like Trang and Apple of Vietnam, and Anjol of Nepal, to pursue their studies at the University.
