She highlights the renaming to “university” and the introduction of new academic programmes. With UTM’s 30th anniversary approaching, Dr. Vong assures that the University will remain committed to excellence

By Dr. Fanny Vong Chuk Kwan | UTM Rector

The start of a new academic year at UTM is always a moment of great joy, as it marks the beginning of the academic journey – full of promise and opportunity – for a new intake of students.

For UTM, the year 2024 holds special significance. Our institution recently underwent a transformation, when in April the Macao Institute for Tourism Studies (IFTM) officially became the Macao University of Tourism (UTM). This milestone was the latest in an ongoing history of growth and commitment to providing top-tier education and research in the tourism and hospitality field.

This academic year, UTM welcomes the largest-ever intake of new students in its history, with more than 900 enrollees, a sign of an expanding and robust student body. Contributing to this increase is the launch of several new academic programmes this year, each aiming to provide a diverse, comprehensive education that prepares young people to become frontrunners in their respective fields.

UTM is venturing into new academic disciplines to meet the evolving needs of society, keeping pace with the times. This year, the University is introducing several undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral programmes, related to international business, event tourism, and business administration, among other areas.

These additions will significantly enhance the talent pool required for Macao’s adequate economic diversification, nurturing world-class professionals who can contribute to Macao’s goals of becoming a “City of Sports” and a “City of Performing Arts”. For new students in these programmes, this signifies a pioneering role, leading the way into a future of endless possibilities and remarkable achievements.

Looking ahead, UTM remains committed to launching further high-end programmes. The University will also continue to expand its dual degree offerings, allowing students to spend a year at a partner institution abroad and obtain a degree from that school in addition to a degree from UTM. These dual degree initiatives are designed to broaden the global horizons of students, at either undergraduate or postgraduate level.

Important milestone

Next year marks the 30th anniversary of UTM and its predecessor institution. Since 1995, our institution has grown from a boutique education provider into a renowned university, reflecting an unwavering dedication to excellence in education and research. This remarkable journey would not have been possible without the collective efforts of our students, alumni, faculty members, staff, and partners.

The ongoing development of UTM’s two campuses plays a crucial role in solidifying the University’s standing. Several initiatives are under way – and others will be launched soon – to upgrade and expand existing facilities, in order to ensure our students have access to top-notch equipment and state-of-the-art amenities.

Over these nearly three decades, UTM’s commitment to quality has been evident through its prominent position in various rankings, and via international certifications and awards it has obtained. For instance, UTM now ranks in the top 1 percent in the world in the research field of general social sciences, according to the latest Essential Scientific Indicators (ESI) citations data. Being recognised in this manner underscores the global impact and relevance of UTM’s academic contributions.

As we embark on this new academic year, I encourage each of our new students to embrace with enthusiasm and determination the educational opportunities offered by UTM. Their time at the University will be filled with challenges, but also with chances to discover new things and develop academically and personally. The UTM team will be here to support all of them every step of the way.

As UTM embraces a new academic year, Rector Dr. Fanny Vong Chuk Kwan reflects on the significance of 2024 for the institution.
