The programme allows eligible postgraduate students from UTM to spend a portion of their studies at UQ, culminating in the award of two master’s degrees, one from each institution.

Ms. Rachel Li Minyi, from UTM’s Master of Science in International Hospitality Management programme, recently became the first UTM student to graduate from the ‘1+1 Dual Master’s Degree Programme’. As part of the scheme, she arrived in Australia in July 2023 to begin her second year of postgraduate studies, after an initial year at UTM. She says her experiences at UQ have deepened her understanding of global aspects of the tourism and hospitality industry.

Her goal when enrolling on the dual master’s degree programme was “understanding trends and innovations that shape global tourism and hospitality standards,” beyond the rapid changes taking place in the Chinese market, she explains.

Ms. Li reports she especially enjoyed the “blend of theory and practical application” offered at UQ. “The global perspective integrated into the curriculum is incredibly beneficial, preparing me well for international career opportunities,” she adds.

She thinks the time spent at UQ has equipped her with “critical analytical skills, a robust understanding of the global tourism market, and practical experiences through various extracurricular activities.”

At the Australian university, Ms. Li took on several volunteering and other roles, which she credits with enriching her time there, and her education overall. “As a volunteer at various art exhibitions and as a planner for events within my courses, I have gained practical experience that extends beyond the theoretical knowledge learned in lectures,” Ms. Li notes.

“Organising these events required thorough planning, effective communication, and teamwork, all of which are essential skills in any professional setting,” she adds.

Ms. Li encourages UTM postgraduate students to make the most of the exchange opportunities on offer. She adds: “I would recommend UQ for its excellent academic programmes, diverse community, and strong support systems.”

Editor: UTM Public Relations Team

Ms. Rachel Li is the first UTM student to graduate from a dual master’s degree programme linked to The University of Queensland in Australia.
