In an era where globalisation thrives, studying abroad has become an unmatched gateway to cultivating versatile talent. For three outstanding students from the Macao University of Tourism, the 2024\/2025 academic year marked a journey of growth, resilience, and global exploration. Immersing themselves in diverse cultural landscapes, they not only advanced their professional knowledge and expanded their mindset but also developed independence, adaptability, and problem-solving skills\u2014key foundations for a promising future both personally and professionally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Life Reimagined in Canada<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chan Chi In<\/a>\u00a0, a dedicated student pursuing a degree in tourism event management, embarked on a life-changing year at the Capilano University. Her time in Canada was not just about academics; it became a transformative experience, helping her unlock untapped potential and reshape this local student\u2019s self-perception.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chi In, long driven by the belief that \u201ctraveling a thousand miles is as valuable as reading a thousand books\u201d, viewed overseas exchanges as a way to enrich her worldview. Embracing this philosophy, she courageously ventured across the Pacific Ocean to Canada, embracing every challenge and opportunity that came her way at the university.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 \u201cI\u2019ve always considered myself a very independent person who adapts quickly to new environments,\u201d Chi In shared. \u201cBut during my exchange, there was one moment during my exchange programme that truly tested me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She recalled a particularly difficult time when a stomach flu swept through her dormitory, and she, too, was severely affected, bedridden and overwhelmed with homesickness. Yet, even in this moment of hardship, her roommates\u2014despite being unwell themselves\u2014provided her with comfort and kindness, bringing a warmth of friendship that she would never forget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat moment made me realise how much the friendships I built during my exchange meant to me,\u201d Chi In said. \u201cDespite being far from home, I was surrounded by people who cared about me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The university regularly organised a variety of orientation and social events designed to help students build connections and expand their networks. Among these were culturally themed festivities that not only significantly honed Chi In\u2019s communication skills but also deepened her understanding and appreciation of diverse cultures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs a tourism professional-in-training,\u201d she expressed, \u201cI believe that understanding cultural diversity is essential for delivering exceptional service to guests. It also made me confident when working with partners from different cultural backgrounds.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During her studies, Chi In took deliberate steps to further her personal and professional growth. She enrolled in courses such as anthropology and philosophy, which fostered critical thinking and inspired her to see the world through new perspectives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reflecting on her decision to study abroad, Chi In admitted that she had initially worried about the possibility of delaying her academic progress. However, she now describes the exchange as an \u201conce-in-a-lifetime\u201d opportunity\u2014one she was fortunate to embrace. It was this leap of faith, stepping out of her comfort zone, that allowed her to experience an entirely \u201cnew world\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI could have spent the same semester repeating routines,\u201d Chi In advised, \u201cbut I decided to venture to another country and begin an exciting new chapter. Through this experience, I discovered that I am stronger than I have ever thought, and it taught me to appreciate the small, beautiful details of life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Experiencing Warm Welcomes in the United States<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Monica Zhang, from Tianjin, was instantly enchanted by the awe-inspiring landscapes of Flagstaff, Arizona<\/a>, as she stepped onto its soil. The warm and enthusiastic reception by university representatives at the airport marked a heartwarming beginning to her exchange journey at the Northern Arizona University<\/a>\u2014a journey filled with promise and growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Reflecting on her first day in the US, Monica described, “The towering pine trees and stunning mountains all around made it feel like stepping into a living masterpiece.” But what moved her most was the heartfelt welcome she received. “The entire airport seemed alive with banners, smiles, and open arms. It felt as though they were welcoming an old friend.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The dry and cold weather, while potentially harsh for some, brought a comforting familiarity to Monica, who grew up in northern China. “This climate mirrored my hometown and reminded me of winters I\u2019d always cherished. Dry air and the chill of winter have a way of rejuvenating my spirit,” she said. The long-lost joy of snow only amplified her excitement and sense of connection to this new place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    A spirited and adventurous mind, Monica rekindled her new love for skiing and spoke passionately about the Snowbowl ski resort near the campus. Beyond the joy of skiing, the panoramic views from the summit left her in awe. The harmony of pristine snow with the warm and friendly campus atmosphere deeply resonated with her. \u201cA simple smile from anyone you met could light up your entire day,\u201d Monica shared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    She added, \u201cWhen you needed help, there was always someone ready to offer it.\u201d This inclusive and supportive environment enabled Monica to forge friendships across the globe, adding vibrant colours to her overseas experience. Alongside her international peers, Monica not only attended classes but also bonded over creating traditional Chinese dishes, savouring the joys of cultural exchange. During her five-month stay, Monica seized the opportunity to travel across the United States, immersing herself in the beauty of diverse landscapes and cultures, leaving her inspired and enriched.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    As a student of Tourism Event Management at the Macao University of Tourism, Monica admitted initial doubts about going on such a distant exchange programme. Yet she reflected, “Living here opened doors to endless possibilities. I found confidence within myself and learned to embrace my unique qualities. The openness and inclusivity of this place inspired me to return to the US for further studies and pursue a graduate degree.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Innovative Flavours in French Gastronomy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Yuki Zhou, a third-year student pursuing a Bachelor of Science Degree in Hotel Management at the Macao University of Tourism, 2024 was a transformative year. Yuki participated in an exchange programme at Ferrandi Paris, the French School of Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management in France, and in just four months, she not only expanded her professional knowledge but also experienced profound personal growth that would shape her future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Reflecting on her time in Paris, Yuki described the institution\u2019s unique balance of theory and practice as a driving force. It inspired students to push boundaries, think creatively, and gain fresh insights into the hospitality industry, empowering them to plan their careers with renewed purpose and passion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Upon arriving in France, Yuki, born Shandong province, came across language barriers, but the welcoming and supportive environment among her peers and teachers motivated her to leave her comfort zone. She remarked, “I gradually realised that language isn’t a barrier\u2014it’s a bridge that connects people. This shift in mindset not only helped me connect with others but also allowed me to significantly improve my language skills.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Through consistent effort and encouragement from those around her, Yuki\u2019s confidence swelled. She grew more comfortable engaging in discussions, collaborating on projects, and sharing her ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      This newfound sense of self-assurance was a cornerstone of her exchange experience. She reflected, “Looking back, I believe I\u2019ve grown in ways I never imagined\u2014whether it\u2019s learning to work with others or understanding myself better. This journey has taught me to tackle life challenges with a more positive outlook.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      “Collaborating with students from all over the world for a common goal made me realise how crucial language and teamwork are in any setting,” she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      The exposure to different ways of thinking and global perspectives had a profound impact on Yuki. She shared, “Interacting with people from different cultures opened my mind to new possibilities and motivated me to embrace diversity and inclusivity in my approach to life.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      One of Yuki\u2019s most memorable moments came from a restaurant operation class. Together with her classmates, she designed a new menu, arranged workflows, and managed the restaurant\u2019s operations. Everyone played their part, and the seamless teamwork created a sense of shared accomplishment. \u201cWhen we finished, sharing my ideas in such a positive and supportive atmosphere, and hearing the warm applause and encouragement from everyone, made me feel truly accepted and valued by the community,\u201d Yuki recalled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
