Professor Dr. Suh-hee Choi jointly arranged a cultural tour of the Republic of Korea from 15 to 20 July. The tour included visits to heritage sites and interaction with Korean students.<\/p>\n<p>The tour party was comprised of 20 IFT students. The Macao Tertiary Education Services Office supported their trip.<\/p>\n<p>The visitors were accompanied by Korean students on excursions to several places in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage List, and to the Korean National Commission for UNESCO. The World Heritage Sites visited included the Changdeokgung Palace and the Jongmyo Shrine, both in Seoul; and the Baekje Historic Areas in the city of Gongju.<\/p>\n<p>The students learned about the Joseon and Baekje kingdoms, which are of great importance in Korean history. They heard about the dynasties that ruled the kingdoms, and the religions and philosophies that prevailed in each.<\/p>\n<p>The tour party stayed in a guesthouse within a traditional Korean house, a \u2018<em>hanok\u2019<\/em>, which gave them a taste of a more traditional Korean way of life. The group also visited settlements made up of <em>hanok \u2013 <\/em>Jeonju Hanok Village and Bukchon Hanok Village \u2013 gaining an understanding of Korean traditional architecture.<\/p>\n<p>The students stayed in the Magoksa Temple, a mountain temple that is a candidate for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List. There they became acquainted first-hand with Korean Buddhism.<\/p>\n<p>The visitors made an excursion to the National Intangible Heritage Center, in the city of Jeonju, where they learned about the traditional Korean craft of making decorative knots, called \u2018<em>maedeup\u2019,<\/em> and saw other examples of the country\u2019s intangible heritage.<\/p>\n<p>The tour also included meetings between students from IFT, Seoul National University and Kongju National University.<\/p>\n<p><em>By IFT Invited Assistant Professor Dr. Suh-hee Choi<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The IFT Student Union Heritage Club and IFT Invited Assistant Professor Dr. Suh-hee Choi jointly arranged a cultural tour of the Republic of Korea from 15 to 20 July.
