IFT is holding until 13 September an exhibit entitled \u201cReunion \u2013 Group Exhibition of Contemporary Art\u201d. It displays 17 works by 6 artists living in Macao and Mainland China.<\/p>\n

The exhibition is the second held by IFT in the Art Mingle@IFT series. The series is part of the contribution of the Institute to Art Macao, a new international programme of arts and culture promoted by the Cultural Affairs Bureau, which runs until the end of October.<\/p>\n

On show are works by Macao-based artists Mr. Cai Guo Jie, Mr. Lai Sio Kit and Mr. Denis Murrell, along with works by Mainland Chinese artists Mr. Song Gewen, Mr. Xie Qi and Mr. Wu Li. The curator of the exhibition, Mr. Deng Binbin, is a renowned connoisseur of art in Mainland China.<\/p>\n

The exhibition is being held in the Educational Restaurant on the IFT Mong-H\u00e1 Campus.<\/p>\n

At the opening ceremony on 8 August, IFT President Dr. Fanny Vong pointed out that the Institute had been broadening the range of courses it offered in creative fields. Dr. Vong said the strategy was to build up the skills of Macao people and so contribute to the development of cultural and creative industries in the city, as envisaged by the Macao SAR Government.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe provide students with access to courses on different art subjects,\u201d Dr. Vong said. \u201cWe will keep putting effort into having exhibitions and seminars to help the development of local culture and creativity.\u201d<\/p>\n

The IFT Tourism and Hotel School offers programmes of study in creative subjects, which vary in duration and degree of specialisation. The subjects range from fine art painting to computer animation to leather crafting.<\/p>\n

The Institute has started a special series of art courses, taught by painters prominent in Macao, with a view to giving Macao people the opportunity to develop their talent for painting while interacting with renowned artists. The course instructors in the Macau Contemporary Artists Series include Mr. Murrell, Mr. Cai and Mr. Lai, whose works are displayed in the Reunion exhibit.<\/p>\n

The exhibition\u2019s curator, Mr. Deng, teaches in the IFT Certificate Programme in Visual Art Marketing and Management, offered in partnership between the Institute and the Cultural Affairs Bureau.<\/p>\n

One of the exhibiting artists, Mr. Cai came to live in Macao 8 years ago, having been born in Hsinchu in Chinese Taiwan. He says Macao people\u2019s attitudes to art have changed significantly. These positive changes, he says, are due in part to the Continuing Education Development Plan drawn up by the Macao Education and Youth Affairs Bureau to promote lifelong learning, which covers courses to do with the arts.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen the Continuing Education Development Plan was first put into action, people registered for art courses, but they came just to complete their records of attendance,\u201d Mr. Cai says. \u201cLater on, people began coming in increasing numbers actually to learn. They even want to learn more than what they are taught in the classroom.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr. Cai describes Art Macao as a pioneering programme that prompts the development of the arts and culture in Macao.<\/p>\n

Another of the exhibiting artists, Mr. Song, says the Reunion exhibition reflects the spirit of Macao, bringing together artists with various backgrounds who use various forms of artistic expression.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy artistic approach is very different from other artists here, since I don\u2019t do much painting,\u201d Mr. Song says. \u201cI do a lot of installation art, focused on the relationship between the artwork and the environment around it. My pieces can differ according to the environment, and the differences trigger new thoughts.\u201d<\/p>\n

IFT will hold in September the third exhibition in the Art Mingle@IFT series. It will be a show of works of art by students and lecturers at the Education University of Hong Kong.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
