southern island province of Hainan on an exchange from <\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">22 to 28 <\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">December to look at the development of the island as an international tourist destination.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\">The \u201cHainan International Tourism Island Construction\u201d study tour was arranged by IFTM and the <a name=\"OLE_LINK2\"><\/a><a name=\"OLE_LINK1\"><\/a>Hainan University \u2013 Arizona State University Joint International Tourism College in the provincial capital, Haikou. <\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">The visit was part of the <a name=\"OLE_LINK4\"><\/a><a name=\"OLE_LINK3\"><\/a>\u201cTen Thousand People\u2019s Scheme\u201d arranged by the Central People\u2019s Government Ministry of Education to offer students in Macao and Hong Kong a clearer picture of Mainland China.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\">The visiting students focused on the effort to make Hainan an <\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">international tourist destination. <\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Their <\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">interaction with leading figures at the Joint International Tourism College, and the staff and students there, informed the IFTM students about the development of Hainan University and the international system of education followed by the College. They discussed the development of Hainan, the pros and cons of the growth of tourism, and the aim of making the island what the authorities call \u201can international tourism consumption centre\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\">The visitors attended a thought-provoking lecture by staff of the <a name=\"OLE_LINK12\"><\/a><a name=\"OLE_LINK11\"><\/a>National Institute for South China Sea Studies in Haikou. The lecture informed the audience about the Chinese proposition for the South China Sea and associated challenges. It was a valuable opportunity to learn about Chinese sovereignty over parts of the <a name=\"OLE_LINK14\"><\/a><a name=\"OLE_LINK13\"><\/a>South China Sea.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u201cI benefited greatly from the lecture,\u201d said one of the IFTM students, Apenie Ao. \u201cI got a better understanding of the sovereignty issues in the South China Sea and gained new insights into the topic.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\">The exchange gave the IFTM students a taste of the rich cultural and natural resources of Hainan. They saw how the unique cultures of the ethnic minorities that inhabit the island are promoted. They visited the <a name=\"OLE_LINK16\"><\/a><a name=\"OLE_LINK15\"><\/a>Binglanggu Li and Miao Cultural Heritage Park, a top attraction for tourists, where they learned how to dance the traditional Li bamboo pole dance and sing the Li song &#8220;<a name=\"OLE_LINK18\"><\/a><a name=\"OLE_LINK17\"><\/a>Jiu Jiu Bu Jian Jiu Jiu Jian&#8221;, which means, in English, \u201cIt has Been A Long Time\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\">The visiting students toured attractions such as the <a name=\"OLE_LINK24\"><\/a><a name=\"OLE_LINK23\"><\/a>Haikou Volcanic Cluster Global Geopark, <a name=\"OLE_LINK26\"><\/a><a name=\"OLE_LINK25\"><\/a>Wuzhizhou Island and the <a name=\"OLE_LINK28\"><\/a><a name=\"OLE_LINK27\"><\/a>Yalong Bay Tropical Paradise Forest Park. They also inspected the <a name=\"OLE_LINK30\"><\/a><a name=\"OLE_LINK29\"><\/a>Atlantis Hotel and <a name=\"OLE_LINK32\"><\/a><a name=\"OLE_LINK31\"><\/a>Sanya International Duty Free City to get an idea of how rapidly the hotel and duty-free retailing businesses are growing in Hainan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u201cI hope that Hainan can maintain its core characteristics: sunshine, sea, beaches and green scenery,\u201d said another of the IFTM students, Aaron Nip. Aaron wished the province success in reaching its goal of becoming an international tourism consumption centre.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\">The exchange taught the IFTM students about the history, culture and development of Hainan. It was a chance to build friendships with Mainland Chinese students that may lay the foundations for future cooperation between Macao and Hainan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u201cHainan is developing rapidly and has support from national policies.
