The Young Sk\u00e5l International Macau Mentorship Programme is a \u201cgolden opportunity\u201d for IFTM students to gain insights and advice from veteran leaders in tourism and hospitality. That is according to Alex Wu Qitao, a Year 4 student on the Tourism Event Management Bachelor Degree Programme.<\/p>\n

Alex took part in the inaugural edition of the annual mentorship programme, launched in March 2019. \u201cThe discussions with my veteran mentors enabled me to broaden my horizons regarding the industry\u2019s future,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

The Sk\u00e5l mentors also provided Alex with advice when he was preparing for his 6-month curricular internship, part of his IFTM study programme. The advice allowed him to \u201cquell some doubts\u201d about his internship choices, he says. \u201cIn return, the mentors were keen on sharing with me insights from their working experience; they also offered me constructive suggestions.\u201d<\/p>\n

Alex\u2019s mentors under the programme included IFTM Vice-President Ms. Florence Ian Mei Kun, and the head of the Institute\u2019s Administrative and Financial Division, Mr. Frankey Sou Heng Fu.<\/p>\n

The Young Sk\u00e5l International Macau Mentorship Programme targets young people either studying or working in the travel and tourism sectors. It provides participants with access to mentors from a number of professional fields, such as marketing and hospitality. The programme was set up by Young Sk\u00e5l Macau, an affiliate of Sk\u00e5l International Macau.<\/p>\n

Sk\u00e5l International is a global platform bringing together travel and tourism professionals. It was established in Paris, France in 1934, and the Macao division was inaugurated in 1979. Sk\u00e5l International has today approximately 13,000 members spread across 334 clubs throughout 100 countries.<\/p>\n

In a bid to nurture talent for the tourism sector, Sk\u00e5l groups across the globe have since 1999 been setting up Young Sk\u00e5l chapters. Young Sk\u00e5l Macau was inaugurated in 2018.<\/p>\n

It was through his participation in Young Sk\u00e5l Macau that Alex gained access to the Young Sk\u00e5l International Macau Mentorship Programme. The local chapter has additionally provided him with other opportunities. In 2019, he was selected as a delegate to the 48th Sk\u00e5l Asia Congress in Bangalore, India.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a unique experience,\u201d Alex recalls. \u201cThe congress allowed me to keep abreast of industry development in Asia.\u201d<\/p>\n

He says the Sk\u00e5l Asia Congress was an opportunity for him to expand his international contact network through participation in round-table discussions with other Young Sk\u00e5l members from around the globe. Additionally, a field trip offered by the organisers during the Bangalore conference, was an eye-opener regarding Indian culture, Alex points out.<\/p>\n
