Purpose

Software Asset Management (SAM) is a process of managing and optimizing the purchase, deployment, maintenance, utilization and disposal of software applications within UTM. SAM helps to reduce costs, improve security and compliance, and enhance productivity and performance.

Scope

This guideline applies to all users that are using University’s computers to process information.

Guidelines

In UTM, IT division deployed SCCM (System Center Configuration Manager) on every desktop computer to deploy and manage software. SCCM also provides asset intelligence features that collect and report information about the hardware and software assets. SCCM has following functions:

• Discovering and inventorying the software assets in desktop computers
• Identifying unused or underused software licenses
• Tracking specific software usage and metering
• Enforcing software license compliance
• Automating software updates and patches
• Reporting on software assets and their status

UTM can benefit from:

• Single tool for managing both hardware and software assets
• Comprehensive view of the software inventory and license consumption
• Reduced risk of overspending or underutilizing our software resources
• Improved security posture by keeping our software up-to-date and compliant
