University of Surrey academic discusses event education and best practices

As part of academic activities designed for the newly-launched master's degree programmes in International Events Management, students of the course "Design and Development of Professional Live Events" are required to organise multiple events throughout the semester, including the guest lecturers arranged throughout the semester. This involves students to plan and host these events in preparation for larger and more complex events to come.

The importance of event management education research is sometimes undermined for its importance and role in establishing industry best practices. Dr Yanning Li from the Surrey Business School of the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom was invited to speak to students on the topic "event education and best practices". Through her experience in the event field as a practitioner as well as her academic role, Dr Li shared with the students the importance of knowledge transfer and how industry expectations establish best practices, which ultimately shape today's benchmarking and education excellence.

Dr Ubaldino Couto, course instructor, added that "events are great platforms to introduce, instil and reinforce learning and good behaviour… those designing and developing event programmes must consider how to harness its potential for the wider benefits beyond profits". Dr Couto continued, "through understanding the reasoning behind, students should incorporate and transform these ideals into best practices to create sustainable and responsible events".
