Portuguese folk dance in UTM

Dr Hazel Xu, Assistant Professor of the Faculty of Innovative Hospitality Management recently invited the Macao Folklore Dance Association UTM for a guest lecture and workshop to deepen students' understanding of Macanese culture and Portuguese folk dance as an intangible cultural heritage.

Led by Ana Maria Manhão Sou, President of the association, the representatives gave an introduction of their work, followed by an interactive workshop to students of MSc International Events Management programme in order to cultivate the awareness and importance of incorporating unique cultural elements into events to enhance cultural experiences.

The delightful afternoon began with a sharing of knowledge about the origins, genres, costumes, and music of Portuguese folk dance with the students. Students and the association members discussed and exchanged ideas about the practices and insights of preserving and promoting Portuguese folk dance as an intangible heritage of Macao. The interactive session that followed had the guest speakers dressed in traditional folk-dance costumes and the classroom transformed into a stage with Portuguese folk dance performances. The students were invited to participate and learnt about the basics of traditional Portuguese dance.

Portuguese folk dance is an important cultural element in Macao, which is often used to showcase its Portuguese influences and cultural connection to Portugal, highlighting Macao's unique characteristics as a role and platform to promote trade and cultural exchange between China and Portuguese-speaking countries. In addition to providing quality education in this field of study, UTM programmes in events management, offered at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, always incorporate contemporary and topical elements into the curricula.
