Year 2 students gain industry insights at seminar on event careers

Recently, Macao University of Tourism invited representatives from the Macau Federal Commercial Association of Convention & Exhibition Industry (MCECA) to speak to students about the development of Macao's event industry and related career opportunities. The seminar aimed to provide students with clear direction for their future career paths in the event industry.

The event featured two speakers from MCECA: Mr. Lawrence Che, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Chessman, and Mr. Chi Ieong Lam, Chief Executive Officer of the Mind-Blowing Film Culture Co., LTD.

Mr. Che shared insights into the post-pandemic expansion of Macao's event industry and the strengths the region holds in event organization. He noted that the global event industry has experienced rapid growth following the pandemic, with countries worldwide hosting different events to revitalize their economies and boost tourism. As a tourism-driven city, Macao, he suggested, should learn from successful event-hosting strategies from other countries and regions, and adapt them for local events. He also emphasized Macao's advantage in offering high-quality infrastructure and facilities, along with top-tier services.

Mr. Lam introduced students to various roles within the event industry. He explained that professionals in this field often begin in entry-level positions responsible for a wide variety of tasks and duties, and then gradually advance into specialized roles. He encouraged students to gain hands-on experience by participating in event preparations, which could improve their chances of entering the industry and also to ‘try out’ different roles within the vast scope of the event sector.

After the seminar, a number of students expressed their enthusiasm for the event industry. While navigating the uncertainties about the job market and career planning, they found the seminar highly valuable, providing them with clearer career vision and greater confidence in their future prospects.
