The Faculty of Innovative Hospitality Management (FIHM) and International Centre for Tourism and Hospitality Research (ICTHR) hosted Dr Julie Whitfield from Bournemouth University in a series of teaching and research activities on events management.
Dr Whitfield made a detour to Macao while travelling to Beijing for the 7th International Conference on Events – Making Waves in Asia: Exploring New Frontiers in Festivals and Events, in which both UTM and Bournemouth University have been co-organising since 2013. Dr Whitfield delivered two guest lectures to UTM students of BSc in Tourism Event Management and MSc in International Events Management programmes on event risks and greening events respectively. The guest lectures also attracted a number of students from other programmes who were interested in the topics given their relevance to Macao's 1+4 economic diversification strategy and the increasing recognition of the crucial role of events in attracting business travellers to destinations. During her stay in UTM, Dr Whitfield also met with Dr Fanny Vong, Rector of UTM, as well as faculty members and research students to exchange ideas and explore potential research collaborations. In addition, Dr Whitfield introduced Bournemouth University to UTM students for exchange programmes to the UK, having established a cooperation agreement with UTM years ago with a number of outstanding students having already spent a semester abroad through exchange programmes. Dr Whitfield concluded her Macao trip by attending the UTM 30th Anniversary Gala Dinner.
The Tourism Event Management team within the Faculty of Innovative Hospitality Management is actively engaged in local and international collaborations, serving important roles to shape government policies, develop industry-education initiatives, advance research in events management, and most importantly, to nurture tomorrow's graduates who are socially and environmentally-responsible, resourceful, and resilient with a ‘can do and will do’ attitude ready for future challenges.
