On 20 October 2025, students from the Master of Science in Luxury Hospitality and Health Service Management programme, under the guidance of Lecturer James Wong, conducted an academic field trip to the historic Hotel Central. The visit aimed to provide students with practical understanding of heritage hotel operations and sustainable hospitality practices.
The tour commenced at the hotel's ground floor reception area and the "Historical Cultural Corridor." The guide detailed the hotel's history and technical aspects of the architectural revitalization project. This project, supervised by the Macau Cultural Affairs Bureau, included foundation reinforcement and exterior preservation.
At the 11th-floor "Historical Sightseeing Promenade," students enjoyed views of the old city center while examining the hotel's sustainable facilities. Engineering staff explained how the comprehensive heat recovery system repurposes waste heat, alongside introducing the energy-saving benefits of the magnetic levitation central air conditioning system.
The room tour featured three historically themed room types that reflect decades of Macau's characteristic eras. The hotel's Platinum Butler shared practical service techniques, including methods for creating personalized experiences and gathering guest feedback. The visit concluded with afternoon tea at Palace Restaurant, allowing students to experience the hotel's food and beverage operations firsthand.
During the visit, Lecturer James Wong emphasized that modern luxury hospitality increasingly values brand storytelling and unique experiences over traditional opulence. He identified Hotel Central as an excellent example in the "affordable luxury" market, successfully integrating heritage conservation with contemporary hospitality standards.
Students reported that the activity effectively connected theoretical concepts with operational reality, yielding significant learning outcomes. This field trip enhanced classroom instruction in sustainable hotel management and heritage tourism. Participants expressed appreciation for the university's practical teaching approach and anticipate the department will continue organizing similar industry visits to enhance their learning experience.
