UTM Students Conduct Field Study in Zhuhai - Exploring Cultural Heritage and Macao Enterprises in the Greater Bay Area

To deepen students' understanding of the cultural richness of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the integration of Macao enterprises within the region, Macao University of Tourism (UTM) organized a themed field study on November 5 titled “Exploring Cultural Heritage and Macao Enterprises in the Greater Bay Area.” Faculty and students visited Tangjia Ancient Town and the Macau Beer Factory in Zhuhai for an immersive learning experience combining history, culture, and industry.

Led by Professor Chin-Ee Ong from the Faculty of Creative Tourism and Intelligent Technologies and Lecturer Oscar Man Cheng Ho from the Faculty of Innovative Hospitality Management, the morning session focused on the cultural heritage of Tangjia Ancient Town. Participants toured the Xiangsi Hall, Study Abroad Museum, and the former residences of several prominent historical figures. Professor Ong provided on-site insights into the lives and contributions of China's first overseas students — including Li Zhengdao, Yang Zhenning, Liang Sicheng, Hu Shi, Peng Huanwu, Qian Xuesen, and Huang Kun — highlighting their transformative impact on China's modernization and the significance of cross-cultural exchange.

In the afternoon, the group visited the Macau Beer Factory located in Zhuhai's High-Tech Zone. Through guided tours and tasting sessions, students learned about the beer production process and quality control. Lecturer Ho facilitated discussions on how local beverage brands from Macao are innovating and integrating into the Greater Bay Area market, offering students a practical perspective on regional business development.

This field study not only allowed students to step beyond the classroom and engage directly with historical and industrial narratives, but also enhanced their understanding of cultural and economic dynamics within the Greater Bay Area. UTM remains committed to promoting cross-border learning and experiential education, nurturing tourism and hospitality professionals with both global vision and local sensitivity.
