Students from the Events and Society (MICE501) course took part in a visit to the Lai Chi Vun Shipyards in Macao, arranged by Galaxy Entertainment Group (GEG). The objective of the trip is to enrich students' learning and enhance lectures topic by immersing into an important industry-community project. This is a compulsory course of the master's degree in International Events Management and Cultural and Creative Industries Management, led by Dr Hazel Xu and Mr. Ziggy Ao Ieong, respectively.
During the visit, students learned about the history of the Lai Chi Vun Shipyards and why it is an important part of Macau's heritage. Representatives from the GEG shared the background and future outlook of the revitalisation project and highlighted how diverse events and festivals can help inject new energy into the area to promote Macau's community tourism, while raising public awareness of its cultural and historical significance.
The visit also helped students understand how collaboration between the integrated tourism and leisure enterprise and the government can support heritage revitalisation projects, as well as some of the challenges involved in preserving a historic site while keeping it relevant to today's society.
The visit was an invaluable experience for the students. It expanded their horizons and helped them apply what they learned in class to the real world.
