As part of the course "Heritage Conservation" led by Dr. Vicky Chen, students from the Master of Science in Heritage Management and the Master of Philosophy in Cultural Studies programmes at the Macao University of Tourism recently visited the exhibition “The Lisboa, Stories of Macau” held at the Grand Lisboa Palace Art Gallery by SJM Resorts, S. A. Macao. The site visit was arranged to deepen students’ understanding of Macao's rich culture, history, and stories before they explore heritage conservation practices in the city.
The exhibition is praised for its innovative presentation of Macao's 500-year multicultural heritage, employing immersive storytelling that combines historical artifacts, personal narratives, and multimedia displays. It offers a comprehensive portrayal of Macao's unique cultural identity, highlighting the fusion of East and West that defines the city. The exhibition successfully balances educational content with an engaging experience, making cultural heritage accessible to a broad audience, and demonstrates the private sector's efforts in Macao to advance heritage education within the territory.
This visit not only enhanced students' basic understanding about Macao's history and cultural context but also provided insight into the important contributions from the private sector in heritage conservation efforts in Macao. The exhibition exemplifies how private initiatives can play a vital role in preserving and promoting cultural heritage, complementing public heritage conservation strategies.
Through this experience, students gained a closer connection to Macao's unique cultural identity, which supports their future work in safeguarding and promoting the city's heritage.
