UTM Student Voices: Sphinx Guan Shares UK Study Experience in UTM-Surrey Dual Master's Degree Programme

Sphinx Guan, from Guangzhou, grew up enjoying solitude and had little interest in travelling. However, a family trip to Bali after his secondary school graduation changed his perspective on world exploration. This unforgettable experience not only planted the seed of wanderlust in his heart but also set him on an academic path of international tourism management.

“That trip left a profound impact on me. It made me realise the difference between seeing a destination in photos and experiencing it in person. The landscapes in pictures could never match the breathtaking beauty of reality. From that moment onwards, I gradually fell in love with travelling,” Sphinx recalled.

A hard-working student from a young age, Sphinx earned a scholarship to the Macao University of Tourism (UTM) in 2019, where he pursued a Bachelor of Science in Tourism Event Management. Over four years of rigorous academic training, he not only strengthened his professional foundation but also developed unique insights and a deep understanding of the industry.

Upon graduation, instead of immediately making his way into the workforce, Sphinx decided to continue his academic journey – spurred by his passion for knowledge. He enrolled in a dual master's degree programme jointly offered by UTM and the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom, striving for a Master of Science in International Tourism Management,.  joining the first cohort of this dual-degree programme.

For Sphinx, this innovative arrangement has given him “a deeper understanding of global tourism trends, allowing me to stay ahead in the industry and grasp its evolving dynamics”.

The University of Surrey is known for its open and welcoming campus environment, as well as its diverse student community. Sphinx shared, “Joining this dual-degree programme allows you to experience British culture first-hand and immerse yourself in the unique atmosphere here. The student community is incredibly diverse, giving you the opportunity to make friends from all over the world. The learning approach emphasises critical thinking, and studying at Surrey has helped me cultivate a more comprehensive perspective when analysing problems.”

However, studying in the United Kingdom also entailed challenges. Apart from adapting to differences in cuisine, Sphinx found that living in an English-speaking environment provided an excellent opportunity to improve his language and communication skills.

“This experience has enriched my personal growth and will make me more competitive in my future career. I am planning to work in the hotel industry upon graduation. Once I have gained sufficient professional experience, I hope to pursue a doctorate in tourism and eventually become a scholar,” he shared.
