Many outstanding alumni of the Macao University of Tourism (UTM), bolstered by their solid professional foundations and broad international perspectives, have carved out unique career paths in the fields of marketing and luxury brand management, which serves as a testament to UTM’s prowess in cultivating interdisciplinary talent.

Alumna Helena Fong Hok Man, a graduate of Tourism Business Management, has built a diverse career by transitioning from roles in travel agencies and university administration to a deep specialisation in brand communications. Currently serving as the Director of Marketing Communications at The St. Regis Macao, she oversees full-spectrum marketing and communication efforts, including public relations, digital marketing, and social media operations. She believes that the keen market insights and refined aesthetic taste required in the field of brand communications are inseparable from the professional education she received at the university.

Given UTM’s extensive internship resources, Helena actively applied for an internship with the National Trust in the UK during her studies, gaining valuable international practical experience. Upon returning to Macao, she served as a ground handling intern for a commercial airline, where she was responsible for high-end client reception. These experiences provided her with early exposure to professional operations, broadening her horizons and allowing her to build a professional network. Furthermore, the presentation training she received at the university significantly enhanced her communication and delivery skills, which have become the core strengths of her current work in brand communications. Helena suggests that students stay attuned to a wide range of news and advertising case studies to broaden their industry knowledge. She also encourages them to gain diverse work experience, dare to break through personal boundaries, and discover their true passion through exploration.

Alex Wu Qitao, a Tourism Event Management graduate from Shanghai, has demonstrated a career path marked by continuous cross-industry breakthroughs. His professional journey has spanned several prestigious roles, beginning with a marketing internship at Mandarin Oriental, Macau, followed by serving as a Digital Marketing Specialist at W Shanghai, and later working in marketing planning at Galeries Lafayette’s China headquarters. He subsequently moved to France to pursue a Master’s degree in Data Science and Digital Marketing, during which he also handled marketing and business analytics at the L’Oréal headquarters. Moving forward, he intends to further cement his expertise in data analytics within the digital sector.

Reflecting on his career transitions, Alex attributes his initial spark for data analytics to his time at UTM. He notes that the university’s Statistics and Research Methods courses introduced him to foundational data analysis tools, such as SPSS. Under the guidance of his mentor during his senior year, he received a Best Paper Award, and his paper was published in an international academic journal. This experience allowed him to master systematic research methodologies and develop independent analytical thinking. Leveraging this academic background, he later utilised online courses to learn advanced analytical tools, successfully bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application. He believes that the UTM curriculum is centred around the tourism and hospitality sectors, which taught him how to understand industries and gain user insights, allowing him to adapt quickly to brand analysis across different fields.

Connor Su Yupeng, a Cultural and Heritage Management graduate from Heilongjiang, pursued a Master’s degree in Strategic Tourism Management and Marketing at the University of Surrey in the UK after graduation. He currently serves as a Senior Manager at Zeno China Consulting, where he focuses on integrated marketing for premium beauty brands.

Conner notes that UTM focuses not only on imparting specialised knowledge but also on cultivating students’ comprehensive capabilities. Foundational courses in Accounting, Finance, and Economics provided him with a robust academic footing and financial proficiency, becoming indispensable skills in his marketing career. Meanwhile, courses such as Human Resources Management and Event Planning developed his team coordination and on-site execution skills, enabling him to engage confidently with diverse stakeholders in his professional life. With its high-quality teaching resources and international educational vision, UTM provides graduates with a unique competitive advantage. By combining substantial internship experience with in-depth professional competence and fluent English proficiency, the university empowers its graduates to secure a foothold in the highly competitive job market of Mainland China.

Whether putting down roots in Macao, expanding into the Mainland market, or stepping onto the international stage, graduates of UTM draw upon their firm professional grounding and global outlook to excel in the fields of marketing and brand management. Looking ahead, an increasing number of UTM alumni are expected to join this sector, continuing to shine and writing their own remarkable chapters of success.
