IFTM Alumni, Academics Achieve Publication in International Event Journal
中文摘要 / Summary in Chinese

An IFTM alumnus who is currently pursuing a juris doctor degree in Melbourne, Australia, has made his article, co-authored with two IFTM academics, to the international journal Event Management.

The journal, which has its publisher based in the United States, is an A-rated journal on the Australian Business Deans Council (ABDC) journal quality list. It is a peer-reviewed international journal that revolves around events and festivals by studying and analysing them. For more than 20 years, the journal has strived and managed to meet the research and education needs of the event industry.

Michael Tang Zhiqi, a current Juris Doctor candidate at Melbourne Law School, University of Melbourne, and a then third-year high-achieving student at IFTM, accepted the invitation of its faculty members Mr. Don Chi Wai Wu and Mr. Alan Wan Lok Cheng to conduct a comprehensive systematic review collaboratively.

The trio attempted to either draw or rule out connections between mega-events and human rights topics.

The study, titled “Human Rights and Mega-Events: A Systematic Literature Review”, presents a fascinating exploration of human rights in the context of mega-events. The research reveals profound implications for recent mega-events such as the Olympics and the World Cup, shedding light on potential human rights issues underlying these often-glorified events.

Findings resulted in past research studies classified into six groups and 18 topics for recommendation for future research. The findings contribute to theory by identifying and underlining the key areas and research gaps for orientating further studies such as discovering some new phenomena which may elicit relevant research interests. The findings also contribute practically by urging the relevant policy and practice actors to actively seek out the stakeholders entailed in a mega event to minimise its possible adverse effects on the stakeholders.

The team meticulously analysed 127 articles sourced from renowned databases, identifying potential future research topics within this captivating field.

Reflecting on the publication of the article, Michael pointed out that his engagement in this project not only allowed him to examine the event industry from a regulatory perspective, but also equipped him with the confidence to pursue other intellectually challenging paths for his later postgraduate studies.

He also believes this research will expand the current understanding of the event industry from a macro perspective, contributing valuable insights to the discourse on the human rights implications of mega-events.

In addition, Michael has his two teachers to thank for realising the publication of this journal article. “Their tireless guidance, encouragement, and mentorship were instrumental in making this project a success, especially given my initial inexperience with academic journal writing,” Michael underlined.

Only with their training, Michael added, was he successful in becoming the first author of a publication in an international academic journal which is currently rated ‘A’ by the ABDC quality journal list.

Commenting on its alumnus’ and academics success, IFTM regards this publication as a tribute to the academic achievements of Michael, Don, and Alan. “We continue to support various academic research endeavours that contribute to the advancement of knowledge and the betterment of society,” IFTM added.

At IFTM, there is a firm belief in the power of academic research and its transformative potential in enhancing society’s understanding of complex societal issues. The recent publication in the Event Management Journal is a testament to this commitment.

It must be emphasised that the Bachelor of Science in Tourism Event Management degree programmes are accredited by UNWTO. TedQual Certification System, ensuring that the programme is of international standards and recognised globally.
