Undergraduates from the ‘Event Management: Hosting an Event’ course organised the ‘EDI – Coloride Carnival’ to raise awareness about disability and enhance their event planning skills

A group of Year 3 students enrolled on UTM’s Bachelor of Science in Tourism Event Management programme recently organised a carnival-like event to promote the values of equality, diversity, and inclusion within the Macao community.

The event, titled ‘EDI – Coloride Carnival’, took place at the Outdoor Multi-purpose Court of UTM’s Mong-Ha Campus. It was inspired by India’s Holi Festival, renowned for its exuberance and the tradition of scattering vibrantly-coloured powder.

The event associated seven types of disability with a colour specific to each. Event activities helped all those attending experience the day-to-day challenges faced by people with disabilities. The main goal was to promote the values of ‘equality’ and ‘care for others’ among participating UTM scholars and students, as well as the people of Macao, in a fun and educational way.

The EDI – Coloride Carnival also featured music performances, face-painting, and a candle-painting workshop.

The carnival was a project for a Year 3 course called ‘Event Management: Hosting an Event’. This is a compulsory component within the Tourism Event Management programme: it is aimed at providing students with the knowledge and practical skills required to plan, organise, and hold events. The course highlights the importance of project management, including budgeting and scheduling, as well overall planning.

Under the supervision of the course’s leader, Assistant Professor Dr. Ubaldino Sequeira Couto, students were required to conceive, plan, and coordinate a series of ‘EDI’-branded events, including a Lunar New Year blessing activity, a brunch charity sale, and a workshop. The latter three sub-events were hosted to promote the main EDI-Coloride Carnival event and raise funds to cost it.

Sponsors for EDI-Coloride Carnival included: Macau Fachau Wine Company Limited, Camper Macau, U Nature Beauty & Handmade, Pi & The Grind, Top Makeup Artist, Zipcity Macau, Li’ao Advertising Production, Starrymakerr, Wanto Music, Macau Coca-Cola Beverage Co. Ltd., Of Cuz, and Bricolage.

Once the event’s accounts are finalised, any net profits will be donated to the Fuhong Society of Macau, in support of its work with people with intellectual disability.
