UTM’s Tourism Business Management Programme——
Empowering Students with a Multi-Faceted Vision to Pioneer a New Era in Tourism
6/3/2025 078/REL/RP/2025

In response to the ever-evolving and highly competitive global tourism business environment, UTM has curated its Bachelor of Science in Tourism Business Management programme to break traditional academic boundaries. Instead of  focusing on a single or specific area of tourism business, the programme emphasisies the entire process of tourism production and consumption, as well as the intricate interactions within the tourism system and  among key stakeholders.

By integrating theoretical learning, practical opportunities, research, and international cultural exchange, the programme is dedicated to nurturing future leaders in the tourism industry with a strong vision for sustainable development and exceptional management capabilities.

Immersive Learning Environment: Developing Students’ Professional Expertise

Korvo Liu Baichuan, a Year 3 student of the programme, shared that the course structure is flexible and inclusive, as lecturers enhance the learning experience through real-world industry case studies, making the classroom both insightful and inspiring.

The University’s close partnerships with renowned local and international enterprises have also provided students with chances to visit different sites such as Macao and Hong Kong airports, gaining first-hand insight into advanced management practices. “The programme offers valuable industry exposure to students and creates an immersive learning environment,” he said.

The curriculum strongly emphasises the integration of theory and practice, requiring all students to complete a practicum in their first year of study and a six-month internship in the third year. Korvo completed his internship at a major local integrated tourism and leisure enterprise, earning the “Best Intern” award.

"Through the momentum of tourism and cultural integration within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, the Tourism Business Management programme has laid a solid foundation for me, helping me to build a solid framework of professional knowledge,” he said. “It has enabled me to view the construction and development of tourism destinations with a more comprehensive, forward-thinking, and sustainable perspective.”

An All-Round Platform for Skill Enhancement of Students

Wingy Ye Yingqi, another Year 3 student, has set herself three clear goals upon entering the UTM: academic enhancement, practical experience, and personal growth. Today, she is steadily realising these ambitions under the guidance of the programme.

Through field visits organised as part of her studies, Wingy participated in three airport inspections, which sparked her strong interest in airport operations and subsequently led her to complete a six-month internship at Macao International Airport.

She also praised the programme’s broad curriculum, which covers not only tourism and management but extends into human resource management, marketing, and financial management. “This has enabled me to develop more logical thinking,” she noted. “The internship opportunities also enable me to develop a wider range of skills and abilities in a real-world working environment.”

Robust Industry Links to Equip Students for Real-World Practice

Another Year 4 student Carol Xian Jiaying also expressed her intention to pursue further studies, sharing how the Tourism Business Management programme has equipped her with a solid foundation in tourism management theory, while also enabling her to apply her knowledge in real-world industry settings. She and her teammates once participated in a Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao marine tourism innovation competition for national university students, where they won the First Prize for their innovative tour route design and viable business model.

“UTM’s close collaboration with the tourism industry has enabled me to gain early exposure to the integrated resort sector, which will be highly beneficial when choosing a research topic at the postgraduate level,” she noted.

In addition to her academic achievements, Carol once served as President of the Tourism Club of the Student Union of UTM. During her tenure, she actively organised various student activities, including field trips to Hac Sa Beach in Macao, Hong Kong International Airport, and Hong Kong Disneyland. These initiatives sparked greater interest in tourism and hospitality among her peers.

“This programme has not only met my expectations in terms of theoretical learning, but also provided me with a wealth of practical opportunities," she reflected. "For me, the most valuable takeaway has been learning how to transform knowledge into action, and to grow continuously through teamwork."

Enhancing Competitiveness and Strengthening Career Confidence

Kasey Choi Ka Kei, a Year 4 student, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the distinctive learning experience offered by the Tourism Business Management programme. Beyond theoretical study and internships, the UTM actively encourages students to participate in a wide range of themed workshops and extracurricular activities, helping her to build teamwork, communication, and public speaking skills.

Looking ahead, she aspires to pursue further studies at the University, aiming to enrich her professional portfolio and skill set even further. “My time at the University has not only shaped me into a more competitive graduate but also filled me with confidence and optimism for the future,” she remarked.
