UTM’s International Business and Innovative Communication——
Interdisciplinary Integration Unlocks Potential and Expands Students’ Career Pathways
6/3/2025 076/REL/RP/2025

In a rapidly evolving global landscape, effective communication has become more critical than ever in the business world. In response to this growing demand, UTM launched the Bachelor of Science in International Business and Innovative Communication in the 2024/25 academic year.

Unlike traditional communication degrees that tend to focus on journalism and media, this programme places emphasis on strategic communication within diverse business contexts. With a curriculum structured around communication, language and culture, and business management, the programme opens doors to a wide array of career pathways for students.

Developing Holistic Skills to Advance International Business Communication

Year 1 student Jasmine Xu Yutong aspires to become an international business leader and an influential public speaker. She shares that the programme’s dual focus on international engagement and communication aligns perfectly with her goals, equipping her with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the complexities of global commerce and innovative communication.

What Jasmine particularly values is the programme’s integration of theory and practice. Over the past year, under the guidance of her lecturers, she has visited several local communication firms. “These visits have provided invaluable insights into various career paths and inspired me to think critically about my future,” she remarked.

In the classroom, she has been actively involved in drafting business plans, producing promotional videos, and engaging in in-depth discussions on communication strategies and the effective use of artificial intelligence (AI).

“I am confident that this programme will equip me with the essential tools and insights into business practices, leadership strategies, marketing, finance, and management,” she said. “UTM has truly opened doors for both my academic and professional growth, and I am excited about the journey ahead.”

Strengthening Language Skills and Critical Thinking with Extensive Resources and Connections

Fellow Year 1 student Raffael Jia highlighted the programme’s commitment to developing interdisciplinary thinking and cross-sector capabilities. Covering a diverse range of topics, including international trade, cross-cultural communication, digital marketing and AI applications, the programme also encourages students to adopt a broader perspective, helping them build confidence and critical thinking skills.

He also noted the significant improvement in his language proficiency. In addition to continuous progress in English, he has begun studying Portuguese as a second foreign language and has already reached the A1 Beginner level — a solid foundation for future endeavours.

Raffael also praised the programme’s strong emphasis on hands-on learning. Over the past year, he has actively taken part in various on- and off-campus events, including the Macao International Travel (Industry) Expo, the Macao Grand Prix, and multicultural street parades, all of which have provided valuable real-world exposure.

“The programme offers a wealth of learning resources and excellent networking opportunities. The teaching staff bring extensive academic and industry experience, offering professional guidance and invaluable career advice,” he illustrated. “Moreover, UTM peers and alumni form a powerful network which, I believe, will serve as an important asset in my future job search and career progression.”
