6/3/2025 075/REL/RP/2025

Since its launch in 2002, UTM’s Bachelor of Science in Hotel Management programme has earned consistent praise from the industry for its global perspective, emphasis on practical experience, and innovative teaching methods. The programme is designed to balance theory with hands-on practice, combining a multidisciplinary curriculum, small-class teaching, and abundant internship opportunities to comprehensively nurture students into internationally competitive professionals.

Bridging Theory and Practice to Meet Industry Needs

Year 4 student Shaun Wang Shangqi shared that UTM's curriculum is closely aligned with industry demands, offering not only a solid theoretical foundation but also real-world insights through practical training. With the university's support, he completed a six-month internship in the Guest Relations Department at the Bulgari Hotel in Shanghai, where he was honored with the title of “Five-Star Intern” for his outstanding performance.

In addition, he took the initiative to earn certifications in front-of-house service skills from the Macao Occupational Skills Recognition System (MORS), the American Hotel and Lodging Association (AHLA) and the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute (AHLEI) during his spare time.

“The biggest value of the Hotel Management programme lies in its practicality and international outlook. These four years of study have laid a strong foundation in both theory and practice, which will be crucial in helping me achieve my future career goals,” he stated.

Multicultural Exchange and Global Perspective

Year 3 student Wendy Ma Shin Thant May Thwin also emphasised the programme’s focus on team projects and experiential training, which have significantly enhanced her leadership and collaboration skills, as well as boosted her self-confidence. “UTM has given me the opportunity to meet industry experts through our courses. In addition to building networks, the invaluable insights shared by our lecturers are priceless resources that cannot be found in standard study materials,” she added.

Born in Myanmar and raised in Macao, Wendy also highlighted UTM’s commitment to building a diverse and inclusive learning environment that fosters mutual understanding among students and faculty from various cultural backgrounds. The University also actively promotes opportunities for international exchanges and internships, equipping students with a global outlook and strong cross-cultural competencies, she added.

Crossing Borders for Life Transformation

UTM’s high-quality education has been widely recognised both locally and internationally, frequently placing on prestigious global education rankings. This reputation attracts students from Macao and across the globe. One such student is Catherine Thuranira from Kenya, who worked in the hospitality industry for several years but felt limited in her opportunities for advancement and personal growth. Upon learning about UTM’s teaching philosophy and strong academic reputation, she made the bold decision to move across the world to begin a new chapter in her life.

Now in her second year of the Hotel Management programme, Catherine described her learning journey in Macao as transformative. She noted significant improvement in her public speaking skills, and through specialised courses such as wine studies, she gained deeper insights into the operational mechanisms of the hospitality industry.

“Education is not just about acquiring knowledge; it’s about transformation. My time at UTM has been a life-changing journey—one that has inspired me to aim higher, embrace challenges, and contribute meaningfully to the global hospitality industry,” she added.

Experienced Faculty Team Inspires Passion for Academic Research

After completing the four-year Bachelor of Science in Hotel Management programme, many graduates have expressed that the learning journey has opened up broader development opportunities and diverse career possibilities. John Zhuang, who graduated in 2022, went on to pursue a Master's degree in International Wine Management at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and is currently undertaking a PhD at the University of South Carolina in the United States.

He shared that UTM’s curriculum is diverse and engaging, and it was through his studies that he developed a strong interest in both wine culture and academic research. “UTM boasts a faculty rich in both academic and industry experience. I am grateful for the rigorous academic training I received at UTM,” he added.

Defining Career Goals and Enhancing Competitiveness

Clara Lai, who graduated in 2023, remarked that the programme covered key areas such as hotel operations, tourism management, and marketing, enabling her to systematically acquire professional knowledge. She also highlighted the university’s partnerships with renowned hotels and tourism organisations, which offer students a wide range of internship opportunities. Combined with a multicultural learning environment, these experiences significantly enhance graduates’ competitiveness in the job market.

Following graduation, Clara chose to continue her academic journey with a Master’s programme at UTM, further deepening her expertise in the field. “Through the coursework and practical experience at UTM, not only did I gain practical skills and industry knowledge, but I also built a strong career network and developed clear career goals,” she added.
