The city of Chongqing in mainland China hosted in late May the first Belt and Road International Skills Competition. Macao sent a 24-strong delegation to the event, which included several IFT representatives.

IFT academics supported some of the participants as they trained for the event. The contest was held between 25 and 31 May.

IFT Regent for Restaurant and Bar Courses Mr. Miguel Oliveira helped participant Ms. Lei Ka Kei prepare for the competition. Ms. Lei – working at integrated resort Wynn Palace – took part in the restaurant service category, winning a medallion of excellence.

IFT Lecturer Ms. Marieta Wong helped IFT student Choi Kei Nam prepare for the cooking contest in the Belt and Road International Skills Competition. In addition, IFT Lecturer Mr. David Wiley provided training support to participant Ms. Choi Ka Kei, a staff member of Wynn Palace, who took part in the bakery contest.

The Belt and Road International Skills Competition attracted close to 700 competitors from an aggregate of 44 countries and regions, according to the organisers. They competed in 18 categories, including fields as diverse as electronics, floristry and hairdressing. The competition was aimed at promoting exchanges and skill development among people from countries and regions covered by the Belt and Road Initiative.

IFT is also providing training support to Macao’s team for the upcoming WorldSkills competition. The international event, held every 2 years, is described as the globe’s biggest vocational education and skills tournament. This year’s competition, the 45th edition, will be held from 22 to 27 August in Kazan, in the Russian Federation. The 2021 competition will be held in Shanghai, on the Chinese mainland.
