Zhora (Chizhora Delight Ekwenugo), from Nigeria, is currently a first-year student in the Bachelor of Science in Tourism and Business Management programme at Macao University of Tourism (UTM). Having travelled from West Africa to Macao, she has begun a brand new learning journey at UTM, carrying with her a passion and curiosity for the tourism industry.
The International Atmosphere on Campus
Zhora chose UTM because of the university’s international reputation in tourism and business education, as well as the strong international atmosphere on campus. “I wanted to study in a place where tourism is not just a subject, but a way of life,” she says. Macao, as one of the world’s top tourism destinations, offers exactly that environment. UTM’s emphasis on practical experience, global perspectives and cultural diversity perfectly matches her academic and career goals.
The programme she is currently enrolled in combines tourism management with business fundamentals, helping students master both the creative and strategic sides of the industry. Zhora notes that the faculty staff are experienced and always encourage students to think critically and apply theory to real‑life situations. “Even in my first year, I have already learned how tourism drives global economies and cultural exchange.” The interactive classes balance theory and practice, laying a solid foundation for future career development.
What She Has Gained from Studying in Macao
Zhora describes life in Macao as “an incredible experience”. The city blends Chinese and Portuguese cultures, offering surprises everywhere – from the historic architecture of Senado Square to the lively streets filled with delicious food. “Macao is safe, welcoming and full of life – an ideal place for international students to learn and grow.”
Academically, she finds the interactive classroom environment most memorable. “Lecturers do not simply lecture; they guide us to participate in discussions and solve problems.” On the social side, UTM’s diverse student community has made it easy for her to make friends from all over the world, and group projects have also helped her develop teamwork and communication skills.
She encourages students from her home country: “Be open‑minded and ready to learn beyond the classroom. Embrace cultural differences, take part in university activities, and make the most of every opportunity to grow. UTM provides a supportive environment where international students can thrive academically and personally.”
From Nigeria to Macao, Zhora’s study‑abroad journey has only just begun, but she already feels the change this university has brought her – not only in knowledge, but also in vision.
